Hoop Hoop for macOS

Hoop Hoop is made by one person. Write with a problem, a bug or an idea and you will get a reply from the person who wrote the code, not a ticket number.

The basics

• Playing. Drag the ball toward the hoop and let go — it is a throw, not a slingshot. The dotted arc shows the real start of the shot.
• A new ball. Right-click the ball, or choose New Ball from the menu-bar menu.
• Resetting the score. Reset Score in the menu-bar menu. Your best score is kept separately.
• Hiding it. Show / Hide in the menu-bar menu. While hidden it does no work at all.
• Quitting. Quit Hoop Hoop, at the bottom of the menu-bar menu.

Things that come up

My shots all fall short

Drag further, and drag in the direction you want the ball to travel rather than away from it. Because there is gravity, distance genuinely decides power: a hoop near the ball needs about half a full drag, and one across the screen needs nearly all of it.

I can't find the ball

It stays wherever your last shot left it, which can be behind a window edge or off in a corner. It breathes gently while it waits, and New Ball in the menu-bar menu will put a fresh one in play straight away.

The ball went up through the hoop and didn't count

That is intentional. The net is solid from underneath, so a basket has to come down through the rim the way it does in the sport.

Clicking near the ball clicks the app underneath

That is deliberate everywhere except on the ball itself — the rest of your screen belongs to the app you are working in. The grab area is a little wider than the ball, so aim for the middle of it.

The keyboard shortcuts don't work

There are none, on purpose. A desk toy that takes the keyboard away from whatever you are typing in has stopped being a toy. New Ball, Reset Score and Mute all live in the menu-bar menu instead.

There's no sound

Check Mute in the menu-bar menu and the volume slider beneath it, then your Mac's own output device. Hoop Hoop generates its sounds itself, so there is nothing missing to download or reinstall.

It's on the wrong screen

Hoop Hoop plays on your main display — the one with the menu bar. Changing which display is the main one in System Settings → Displays moves the game with it.

How do I stop it opening at login?

Turn off Open at Login in the menu-bar menu. macOS also lists it under System Settings → General → Login Items.

Uninstalling

Drag Hoop Hoop to the Trash. It leaves nothing behind but its preferences entry, which macOS clears with the app.
